Fun with Flags by MB Creations

MB Creations is one man show
effort by Michail Dmitrijevič Betskii from St. Petersburg. Michail did a lot of Napoleonic Paper soldiers for this popular hobby in Russia, but few months ago he came with new line of flags now available to the community via his Facebook page or via Russian shop Magazin Soldatikov.

I wrote already two articles about Russian Flags where I mentioned Michail’s product, but let’s see a new set I got today. 18 sheets arrived from the lovely city of St.Petersburg.

Flags Old and New

In my first review I praised that the Russian flag is truescale, the flags are slighty bigger for better print quality now, but still not the Naval Ensign size banner Flags of War is selling as Russian Flag. What I was not quite happy was very dark tone for some paints, which is not there any more. If anyone is familiar with Scale Distortion effect it helps to better grasp the paints on small miniatures. The only thing which stays is the black outlining, which emphasised the contrast.

Russian Flags

As you can see from the foto, there is difference between first sets and new issue. The old one has 23mm, new have 25mm which is truescale size. The shadows and folds are very smooth. I love the minor details with the color of the flagpole. Signed with the tsars coat of arms is 9x10mm, I am unable to say, if the original is circle or oval, it looks good on the banner, The details in the signet are excellent. The Cavalry (Dragoon) flags I have are 14x17mm + fringe. Very nice details. Biggest advantage of the banner is that it is Russian banner made by Russian guy, so he has the best available resources. And can actualy check the originals in the museum.  They comply with resources I have available about the flags.

Italy

I requested two sheets to be drawn, one of Royal Guard and that of the Italian 15th Infantry Division of 1812. It comply with W.J. Rawkings CB3 Army of Italy. The size of the banners is  18x18mm. For guard you get the battalion fanions as well.

Würtemberg

I have got 25th Würtemberg Infantry Division flagheet. In one sheet you get flags of the 4 regiments as you can see on the photo. The size of the banner is 21x21mm+fringe. Again the details are very nice

Prussia

Several sets of Prussia are available, I have few infantry sheets ordered for clubmate, they are 26x26mm of size. Same as for Prussia, I am no expert on the flags so I can’t give much details

France

I have several sets, I did not checked all of them, however some of them I checked against Hollander’s Nos Drapeaux at Etendards 1812-1815 and they comply with them, including the battle honours. Again the advantage of these is the truescale size, which is what I prefer. The Flags are 15x15mm + fringe. Michail has three different sets of fanions, those of the 19th line requested by my brother with proper wording including battalion nbr. Fanions with wording, but without battalion nbr. Or you can order plain fanions without any wording (which I wanted). The fanion sheets have 6 fanions. Three flag sets according to reglement - plain white, red, blue. And that the blue red fanions as seen in several places in Russia (one is I believe in Kazan Kremlin). But as usually, the fanions are there and you can always ask order for fanions you need.

War of the Roses

I have no idea about War of the Roses, other that’s those are not house of Rožmberk from Lands of Bohemia Crown. Anyway, I have got 5 sheets for our painting completion, and they look just awesome. May be I will do some WOTR later on?

Summary

The quality of paper and print is excellent. I am good with brush, I am terrible with tools, but I can manage with the flags without seriously damaging me, or the flag. I can’t see the difference between others in the paper quality, but my bro said he likes the MB Creation paper more then FOW. You can read majority of the words on the banner. As most of the banners are not for me, I can’t say for sure if they are proper – I know the Russians, and consult with my bro the French and they are excellent. Again the true scale for Russian and French is the main reason I am for Mikhail’s flags.

Ordering

That’s the tricky part. You can check the available banners on the Facebook page and contact Mikhail directly. His address is on his Facebook page, or here: betski.md available on gmail server (I hope you get it from here). Mikhail is using Russian mail with tracing. And believe me, Russian post is on top on UPU standards, due to Customs requirements, so last time I have received info from Mikhail, that he got confirmation I pick up the flags, I was only 200m avail from my local Postal Ofiice. The longest part of the travel between Russia and Czechia are Russian and EU Customs. It took 13 days, but real travel was like 5 days. Rest, custom clearance.
